I have a pre-lock S&W Model 17 with a 6" brl. It is double/single action, great sights, fast, fits the hands, carry is easy in cross draw holster, and accurate. I have shot everything from CB caps, .22 Colobi, .22 short, .22 long, and .22 lr through it. Give the older Smiths a look.
