OK now we're talking, I shoot 223 across the course meaning I start at 200 then move back to 300 and finally prone at 600 yards.
Yah see thats what I wanna get into! Money is needed though haha.
It helps, but if I can do stuff on my teaching salary you can too

Farthest for me with a .223 was a prarie dog kill at a bit over 500 yds. 24" bull brl with a 6-24x optic, CZ 527 with set trigger, setting in a HS Precision stock, bag rested, shooting of a bench. Took three tries to get on him. Lets say a 55 gr Nos;er Ballistic Tip does NOT explode at those distances like they do in the 300 yd range. Wish I could shoot that good still. Wish I had not got rid of that rifle either. Might need to get another soon as I have about 7000 pcs of brass sitting around not being used.

Very good shooting, I have an extra AR and want to buy a 24" upper for ground hog shooting. I can use my 20" but a nice 24" with tripod would be very nice.

So how was your fireworks this evening. Ours was well, non-existant due to the burn ban. On the way home from the cook out the skies got dark and a few rain drops. Sure would be nice to have some serios rain tonight so the kids (all ages) can shoot some tomorrow.

I am going over to a bud's house in the morning. He is buying my DFLE and I am taking the newly acquired grinder and belts over and see what kind of damage we can do on a couple cheap bowies, a British military golok, and some old kitchen knives I have. We will see. Sure will be nice if I can get the hang of it so I don't have to do anymore sandpaper or send them out. Afternoon we are heading to an uncle's place for a cookout. Good thing about it tomorrow is I will have some cold beer. Tonight it was a dry cookout due to all the church people around. Oh well, that is life LOL.
Hope the sanders go well! Is the burn ban due to everything being to dry? Otherwise sounds like the weekend has been good to you all!

Very dry, like August dry. If you look at the grass wrong, it will catch on fire.

Sumo, sorry to hear about the dry conditions. We had a big boomer move through here early evening and knock out power for a few hours.
I would love some boomers. All we have had in the spring was a few showers, no multi-day showers. yuck.

My parents think I am nuts when I drain most of my paycheck into knvies/gear but I figure once college starts and stuff I am going to be severly limited in my spending abilities.

My 223 is an Armalite AR15 setup for service rifle match shooting.
Very nice. Is this the heavy brl with free float hg system that looks like a regular A2 hg?

Heavy bl brl with match front and rear sights and a match trigger. I am in need of a new barrel but the darn thing is still a tack driver at 200 yds using reduced targets for 600 yds.

If it was short it could have been a 91/59, M44, or M38. It is rare to find a rifle with a bad bore since the Soviets rebuilt the rifles so much. In some cases the Soviets would counter bore the brl but that actually can help the grouping. Not seeing the rifle it would be hard to say what the deal is. When you say not accurate, are we talking pie plate accurate, man size accurate, or 20 oz coke bottle accurate? What distance were you shooting?

I had a couple of Nagant's some years ago. The ammo was very cheap and just a fun shooter. I hope you get much enjoyment out of it.
I need to buy a 308. Or something. I would like to start doing long distance target shooting.
Remember if you are not reloading the .308 can get real expensive. Who am I kidding, it is all expensive today. What distance are you wanting to shoot at eventually. Remember to start short and work on the basics, then move on out in smaller increments. Believe me, it will make sense in time. Very few people I know could just shoot distance right off the bat. There are so many factors it is not funny--wind, elevation, temperature, rifle, ammo, shooter, optics, position, trigger control, breathing, etc.
I figure start at about the 75-100 yard mark and the slowly move out. Slowly by over the course of weeks. I remember hearing that when 50. Cal sniper make Mile+ shots they have to take into account the earths rotation?
Yes, not only the .50 cal but some of the other long range beast of cartridges.

Steeley, save some for school but I would encourage you to pick and choose your selections wisely. Buy what you know is in demand in the event you need to sell. I keep telling my wife that all my hobbies have a solid 100% plus return if need be.

I would be happy to be shooting at the 300 yard mark roughly if not farther.
Very obtainable. The thing is breathing and trigger control first. Do you have a .22lr? Start with that at a reduced distance of say 35 yds. Then move to 50 yds, 75 yds, and end at a 100 yds. Use small bore targets and learn the important things as they will make longer distance easier.

Finland took many of the Nagants and made excellent shooters out of them. The winter war proved that.

we built an AR for a buddy with a Wilson 24" brl that would shoot just fine on p-dogs at 400 yds. His optics were not good enough to go past that point. Geissle trigger helped a lot too LOL. Sounds like you have a project in the plans, or at least the thoughts!
