...Can someone tell me waht kind of distance to drop a deer with the .22?
I figured you could, but thought you needed to be too close to pull it off in practice...
I have a good friend who dropped four of them with 22 LR standard velocity rounds fired from an Anschutz. All the shots were less than 50 yds. I have not done it, and will not hunt with anyone who does. In the thick cover down here, most shots are less than 75 yds regardless of the caliber used. With a 22, shot placement is critical, head shots only. I would not recommend using a 22 for deer hunting, as it is not legal and not the optimum caliber for big game. I was only suggesting it as an
emergency survival option. This is not news. It is well known by poachers that a 22 head shot will kill a deer. While I have had many opportunities to do this during squirrel season before deer season opened, I did not need the meat badly enough to risk losing my jeep, hunting rights, and going to jail for taking game out of season with an unapproved caliber on a State WMA. But a well placed head shot with a 22 within 50 yds or so will definitely kill a deer.
