Baldric, according to Wikipedia... "is a belt worn over one shoulder that is typically used to carry a weapon (usually a sword) or other implement such as a bugle or drum....Baldrics have been used since ancient times. The design offers more support for weight than a standard waist belt, without restricting movement of the arms, and allowing easy access to the object carried." This sounds like what I was looking for.
It would seem to me that something 27" long hanging straight down from the hip would get tangled in brush & small trees. I would hate to drag something as nice as Rainwalker's leather work through brush.
How about left side, under the arm, for a right handed person? Strap from top of scabbard, around right side of neck to a point half way down the scabbard connected around the back? A leather piece (wider than the strap) that could slide along the strap so it could be positioned where the strap rests on the shoulder/neck should make the whole rig carry comfortably. A little like shoulder holstering a pistol. Then the left hand could steady the scabbard while the sword is drawn or sheathed. I'm getting as excited about the scabbard as the sword.
Has anyone tried sliding some sort of round disk, with a slot in the center, down the hilt to rest against or in the hilt built into the sword?
