If I don't score:
I would kindly ask one of the dogs who bought more than 1 to sell one to me for the same price/or slightly higher if they want to make a profit. If no one is willing, then I'll just kick myself.

I will sit in my bedroom closet and I won't come out again.

Buy? There's nothing to BUY! What else is there in the world?

No... I will sit in the closet and that's it for me. Others?

Peace.

But seriously there's probably no way I could get a decent knife from the States for $84.90 including Postage & Handling... the shipping I paid for the Mini mojo was $33, and $40 for the DF.
1) $84.90-$33=$51.90
2) $84.90-$40=$44.90

As you can see... what decent knife could I buy??? Recommend me one...

Can't think of any decent high performance fixed blade around 5inches or so for $69.95...
Recommend me one!

WOW, that's 2 times shorter than the Mutt and 1095 Steel? The Mutt just got better...
But seriously, if I don't score a mutt, would any kind hearted dog who bought 2 or more mutts be willing to sell me one?

After crying and throwing fits, lopping a few heads, maybe a rat-5 maybe, I have the TAK-1 in D2 and it's a very nice blade.

I would cook up a plan to obtain my fathers Bandicoot from him.

"Dad, that Bandicoot you have is way out of fashion now. Vic Classics are back with a vengance, you will need about 7 of them to be really cool. I will give you $84.90 for your Bandicoot so that you can go out and go nuts on Vic Classics."

No fair, bigocean. For purposes of this "what if", you have to buy another knife if you don't score a Mutt. In other words:

1) No Mutt . . . period.
2) You have 24 hours to pick another knife or you lose your money.

I would send a check to Dan as advanced down payment on the next SYK

JYD#14 Do you need one, of course you do it's a knife and you like knives.....

I'm a big Ranger fan too, I have the RD7 with orange G10 scales, you could get the RD6 for about the same deal.

No down payments, Bors. If you want to play, you've got 24 hours to PURCHASE the knife.

I'm also looking at the Entrek Badger (3/16"-thick, 3-3/8" blade). According to the rules, there's no requirement to buy a knife with a 5" blade. You can buy any knife you want provided it costs $84.90 or less shipped.

Oh man....

OK I've thought about picking up a Fallkniven from time to time so I would pick up a Fallkniven F1 Swedish Military Knife 3 3/4" laminated stainless drop point blade with VG-10 core and soft stainless exterior, 8 1/4" overall, Thermorun elastomer handle.

From Hillbilly sales Co.

$75.95
$7.36 sh

Total $83.31

I would probably try to get something from Bark River. There site doesn't list prices, but I am sure there is something. Their array of handle choices is impressive.

That's a good choice as well, although the F1 didn't do too well compared to a SS4 and a Howler in a recent field test. But then the Howler and the SS4 cost a lot more than an F1 at $75.95.

Yep but not many choices for $84.90.

I would buy an Ontario TAK-1 in 1095. I was looking to get one of those or a RAT-5 anyway, until I got involved in the SR-77 Cult. Neither of those is as appealing to me as the Dumpster Mutt.

Another knife I would consider is the Becker B1. It sells for $84.95, but that includes the sheath, so the price is comparable.

+1 on the Mora. Got my son one for his birthday. Skinny blades, not full tang, but decent steel and the price is right!

The sheaths stink, fyi. And you will want to sharpen it when you receive it.

I think maybe this one would be cheaper and a pretty nice little blade. Of course, there are those who will not buy CS.

Without going off on a CS rant, why won't people buy Cold Steel knives, Vic? I don't own any and I don't understand what the controversy is all about.
Over on BF there are huge long rants against Lynn Thompson. Of course, like most of you, I would prefer to buy from Dan, but I don't have to agree with all of Cold Steel's advertizing to enjoy their knives. Most of them have given me good service.

I'm with you on that one HornDog. I never cared about the over the top advertising of cold steel however they do make good bang for the buck stuff.

I don't know, but I don't think that it is critical in a small knife. I have never owned a Fallkniven, but have lusted after their Odin bowie for some time.

Like Horn Dog said.. the majority of their military/wilderness knives are shorter blades VG10 stainless.. I think more for light bushcraft?
Not sure how that steel would fare under prying, batoning, heavy chopping, etc.

Not sure about their high end models..

With a knife named after a Norse God, how could you not!
I have tried to tell myself that the name has nothing to do with the appeal of a knife named Odin, but the voices in my head aren't buying that.

they are not the strongest knife as they claim but they are great knives for the price. I have used my recon scout very hard. I don't love the handle but it is my favorite mid sized knife.

I know this knife does not qualify because of its price, but what do you guys think of the Al Mar Sere 2000 Operator?
vic,
I have an almar sere operator and the quality is great. it is one of, if not the nicest small blade I have. S30V steel.

Thank you very much, scrappy. I have owned some Al Mar knives that were better than others. I appreciate the info. I am considering one, but I wasn't sure. They are sort of high end for me (except for my Busse FBM). I like the look and size of the SERE Operator.

There was a guy on the Camillus forum who actually formulated the heat treating for the steel. Sadly, the steel is no longer being made. Camillus made the Carbon V blades for CS, and the 0170-6C Beckers. Those steels are the same.

I can tell you the handle is very comfortable but if you beat the handle the kraton will start to break up a little, the edge of the blade is very nice. my scouts have really abused it. no problems.

Cold Steel does not make knives. They contract them out. Now, there will be no US-made CS knives. Camillus made all the Carbon V knives, or at least the blades. CS's new replacement steel is called SK-5. It is a Japanese version of 1080.

Interesting thread H-D. Thanks!

It seems the importance of developing a quality heat treating regimen is a common denominator for all the companies that make high quality knives. Here we see it reiterated one more time.

Here's a "what if" for the Dogs. In the unlikely event that you're not able to score a Mutt tonight and the money you set aside for it ($69.95 + $14.95 S/H = $84.90) is burning a hole in your pocket, what other knife would you buy instead? The rules are as follows:

1) You can only buy ONE knife. Your choice of design.
2) You have 24 hours to purchase the knife (no layaways, pre-orders or down payments).
3) You cannot spend more than $84.90 including S/H and sales tax (if applicable).

Sorry I got hear a little late,
Thins is a tough one, but a Ontairo RAT 3, Becker Necker, or a Spyderco folder(not sure wixh one)
Of courase none are in the same feild as the Dumpster Mutt, but on my wish list.

In all honesty, the RAT5 would be a good score, I've already got one though.

Thats about all I can think of in your price range. The Rangers would run you about $100 shipped for the RD6. Other than Ranger, Ontario RAT... heck, thats it... in this price range, you'd be nuts to not get Ranger, O. RAT, or Scrapyard!!!

Yes, the knife, not Justin himself.

I suspect so or very close. I went with a package from Justin this past week. Wanted one with blue&black g10 handles sort of like my CGFBM.

RD4 = same price as RD6 = $90

Satin finish is another $20

G10 and spacers will run you another $15

Still a great deal

Leatherface sheath for a 4" blade = $40.

$165 for the ultimate EDC? Very reasonable!

Justin, and Dan & Patti, are all about taking care of thier customers. Thats probably why they both have very, very loyal customer bases.

I like Dan's method of knife releases sooooo much, and the forum here is very, very active.

Justin is quick to do custom upgrades on any of his products.

Between the 2 companies, they cover everything that I need in my knives.

Gonna call it a night, I have an early, early morning appointment w/ my Dogfather to go kill more trees out at Fort Fizzle. I'll post pix of that and my new damascus tomorrow afternoon!

G'nite guys!!

I'm not a traditional Tanto fan...I own a different Tanto and I find the blade shape less useful than almost any other choice. It is easy to sharpen with only one side ground however.

OK - I was going to go to bed...

I used to be a huge CS fan, but I am NOT one any longer. Not because of the hype or the Stryder war, just because I've found a couple of companies (SYKO, Ranger, and Busse) that MAKE THEIR OWN KNIVES and sell them to a very loyal customer base, at reasonable prices (well... Busse has a unique market! ). I have like 8 Cold Steel blades, but I don't respect them the same way as I do Dan, Justin, or Jerry.

Nice steel for the money, but I no longer spend mine on their stuff.

Goodnight all, for real... for real... !!!

If you want a CS, try to score one of the Carbon V knives. Carbon V is going the way of the dodo, never to be seen again.

AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have the Bushman, its very sharp, check out the test at knifetests.com - pretty impressive for a cheap blade.

The GI Tanto will be tough as nails - probably as tough as a strider knife - Les Thompson is no dummy, he will kind of undercut Strider with that knife - all the more power to him.

I have a CS Oyabun in Carbon V - its hands down the sharpest big knife that I own.

I have nothing bad to say about Cold Steel knives, I just prefer to have a "relationship" with my knifemaker, instead of buying knives from a guy that farms out his production.

Goodnight.

The Bushman is by far the best bang for the buck knife CS makes. I don't know about CS's heat treatment but 1095 steel is pretty tough. As for the quality of the Bushman for a spear head, you should go here and watch the videos:

Knife Test Videos

We double post the same stuff all day long. Maybe we should just combine our profiles and take turns manning it.

I almost bought a bushman, but I heard the metal was a little soft for throwing(as in a spearhead), so I changed my mind.

The Bushman is by far the best bang for the buck knife CS makes. I don't know about CS's heat treatment but 1095 steel is pretty tough. As for the quality of the Bushman for a spear head, you should go here and watch the videos:

Knife Test Videos

Gotta quit reading eachother's minds this is ridiculous.

We double post the same stuff all day long. Maybe we should just combine our profiles and take turns manning it.

Goodnight

LOL, good suggestion Dice! It will certainly cut down on typing

Goodnite again

Thanks.
I read it would be "wiser" to just find yourself a good stick/staff and sharpen and heat treat(fire) an end for a spear, that way you can carry a knife and a spear and use them accordingly.
