Sad thing is (for us) is that I'm not really sure what is keeping our economy afloat except the world's belief that we can continue the way our economy is now.

ANY idiot (yes I reckon I am calling the President of the United States an Idiot) knows you can't continue to spend more than you make. ONE day there won't be anybody that believes you have the ability to pay at least the interest, and that is ALL we are able to pay now.
