It is a lock back, only difference is that there is a stop pin right in front of the lock. Who would have thought of that? Also, there is a lot of space inside the lock. Not everything is completely flush and together.

The purpose is to redirect most of the force from the blade to the handles rather than the locking system. I don't know if this is true, just what CS says.
