For as much hate as they get. Baofeng aren't bad for a beginner HAM radio. They ate cheap, easy to program using chirp and have surprisingly good range with the right antenna.

Nothing to listen but require a ham license to broadcast. Free test prep and the testing for the license is inexpensive.
