Wow. Back in either '81 or '82 Russia had a Volcano erupt on the Kamchatka Peninsula. I was stationed on Shemya in the Aleutian Islands about 350 miles away from the Russian Peninsula and we had ash covering everything for a few days, We had to wear those cheapie dust masks when were outside for the first day of the ash fallout.
