I used to compete in the highland games. A strong base is good. I didn't want to go crazy heavy with squats because I wanted to protect my back. I tried not to squat more than 400lbs. I didn't want to deal with the back injuries. The leg press sounds more impressive than it really is. I couldn't come near that much live weight. But ramped it was cake.
