Haha, Yeah I hear ya Ray. ONE of the things I respected from the OIC I had in Japan was because of a statement he made to the Navy once when he answered the phone.
It went roughly: I can't answer that question, I just run the place. Let me get you one of the SOO's for you. (Senior Operations Officrs). That's what they called the HHIC Head Honcho In Charge) of each shift. Me, I was an E6 filling a MINIMUM Majors slot. I felt VERY fortunate and because I filled three different functions there I was the Navy's go to guy quite a lot. Heck one year, I had to agree to work for a week while I was on leave (while in HAWAII)! It worked out OK though, when I got back the Colonel cut my charged leave from 4 weeks to three.
I REALLY liked my job in Japan.
