She's not smarter, we KNOW what she is doing. I Just can't be that mean to Patty. I know it sounds like a cop out, but believe me it IS complicated. Patty wasn't treated all that well as a child OR in her first marriage and it has caused her some problems that are quite difficult to be completely rid of.
