The Hwa Rang were the ancient Korean warriors of the Koryo or Silla Dynasty. TKD didn't come into being until the 1950s after the Japanese occupation lifted. Lots of Korean arts had been in practice but were all outlawed during the occupation. I thought HRD was one of those that TKD cannibalized on it's way to development, but I could be wrong.
