The only time I'd worry with a .308 or a .30-06 would be in grizzly country.
Never bothered me just packing a 308 up north. The truth is that the drive there and back is more dangerous than the hunting. Guys that hunt in grizzly country just like to impress people that never have been in those areas. Makes us seem more manly than we really are
