Strops are a good idea. I carry a piece of leather about 5x10 in my "Kit".
When I sharpen I start out with a Smith's coarse diamond hone (if the edge more than just a light touch up). When I get it to where I want it (I USUALLY don't go all the way to a wire edge) I switch to a coarse Spyderco Medium ceramic hone. If I am working on a blade of 7 inches or more this is usually where I stop. On small blades (and If I want a more refined edge on the larger blades) I go on to a DMT diafold (1x4 inch folding diamond hone) and finish off the edge to where I want it and then I will usually finish up stopping it on the leather for 20-50 licks a side.
