Patty and I both have laptops. We also have a dedicated desktop computer. The only thing I can think I would use it for is a book reader. Based upon this it probably wouldn't be worthwhile for me to get a tablet, but a reader, maybe.
If you are interested in a reader, get a Kindle Fire. It is a great little machine that is easy to look at (for reading at extended periods of time) and does many basic apps like Netflix.
