I was just reading a USA Today article where many states and the feds are considering on taxing how many miles you drive versus a gasoline tax. BUT as we all know it will be an additional tax ON TOP of the gas tax.

Any way, they had this side bar that Y'all might find interesting:

** The FEDERAL gasoline tax now is at 18.4 cents a gallon. This is of course ON TOP of what each individual state charges.
