Picked up a .270 Winchester barrel for my Handi-Rifle. I really had no interest in the caliber but it was a pretty good deal. I was thinking of selling it but after doing some reasearch it seems some folks really like it as hunting round for deer and elk sized game. It would also add some range to my current collection which is what I had been thinking of doing with a .308 or .300 bolt rifle. I come out much cheaper this way I guess but again it's another caliber. I will most likely still get the .300 (another caliber) and just keep the .270 as a backup.

Any thoughts on .270 Winchester?

The 270 occupies a pretty crowded group of hunting cartridges
Many will debate on why 1 is better then another but in my opinion it is mostly hot air
As a general hunting cartridge for deer, black bear sized game, the 270, 7mm-08,308 and 30/06 are pretty much the same
Yes the 270 is slightly flatter shooting, yes with heavier ammunition the 30/06 may be better suited for larger bears
But for average hunting you really won't notice any difference
