Actually one of my other bikes is a KLR650 that I just did the 685 Stage II work to. Love it as well, however I realize how much of a heavy pig it is off road after playing with the new 250 tonight.
Weight of the dualies is a big issue. Specially with a BIG bike like a 650. I like the Suzuki RMZ 400 for a dual sport. Got tons of highway power but still light enough to be nimble.

I do agree, however if you want to do any serious long range cruising you need a little more oomph. I have plans of eventually doing some longer cruises on mixed surfaces.
