In terms of the Vellage people's symbolism, it kind of makes sense that they'd switch from Army to Marine. Perhaps less archetypal, but more subversive. And their act was largely about playful subversion of popular masculine archetypes.

Perhaps they were, but they also dressed up like various masculine archetypes – a soldier, a policeman, a construction worker, a biker, etc. – and then went for the shock value of acting very over-the-top, while subversively singing about themes like the glory of staying at the Young Men's Christian Association.
