IIRC, Thomas Jefferson had some great ideas on elected politicians and serving long terms, pay, etc. In my opinion, a lot of that tonight, the following could be done:
1) Pay for only the time Congress is in session.
2) Same medical that the rest of us are afforded--docts, surgery, etc.
3) Loose the large vehicles that can be picked by the politician and provide them with a small American car ran on CNG.
4) Limit the number of terms that can be served consecutively.
5) If you take money from a lobbyist you are gone.
6) If you miss x amount of votes you are gone (minus for funerals, etc).
7) Can not make money for going to speak at dinners or conferences on Hill time.
8) Personal trips have to be paid for by the politician, go through the same airport security we do, and no extra security.
Just a few thoughts.

Thomas Jefferson was a great man, and his words, even now, still ring true.
